METHODIST HEALTHIER 901

The city of Memphis, Tennessee, recognized a problem — their citizens ranked amongst the highest in the U.S. for obesity. This was fueled by the results of the Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare’s most recent Community Health Needs Assessment that identified heart disease and cancer as the top causes of death in Shelby and DeSoto counties. Armed with this knowledge, a "Healthier 901" initiative was launched to encourage Memphians to collectively lose one million pounds in three years.

LEO Events was brought in to execute this initiative’s kickoff in a way to gain buy-in from the citizens of Memphis. The idea was to focus on having fun and creating a healthy lifestyle rather than on the weight loss itself. Around 2,000 people came to Shelby Farms Park and participated in the dozens of activations LEO created to encourage movement, such as Zumba, yoga, and kickboxing, throughout the park. Healthy cooking demos were popular to all age groups, as were the healthy food trucks. The entire day was designed to be interactive and engage family fun. Our client, Methodist Hospital, received great feedback on this year and now plans to make Healthier 901 an annual event.
